Northern and Southern Malawi

Day 1
After arrival at Lilongwe international airport you will be met and greeted by a Makomo representative and transfered to Kumbali Country Lodge set i8n a prime piece of indigenous countryside.

Day 2 & 3
Transfer to Thyolo Tea Estate in around 7 hours. Packed lunch on route. Overnight in the The Satemwa Tea Estate which lies on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain, with views of rolling tea gardens and the Mulanje Mountain in the distance. There are wonderful walks to be taken - either through the tea gardens or up into the remaining rain forest of Thyolo

Day 4 & 5

Transfer to Kuchawe Inn is situated on the Zomba Plateau surrounded by forest and built on a cliff, which is about 2000m above sea level. The drive up the plateau offers breath taking views of the Phalombe plain and Lake Chirwa. The plateau is crossed by innumerable footpaths leading walkers through indigenous and planted forests to waterfalls, trout fishing streams and stunning cliff edges. Endless walking to the Mulunguzi river with falls and crystal cold water, Emperor’s and Queen view points gives you new energy.


Day 6 & 7

Transfer to Liwonde National Park which is named after the local Amachingo Yao traditional authority that dominates this area. Liwonde is one of Malawi’s most desired park destinations due to its scenically attractive vistas and the diverse range of wildlife to be seen here. Lying on the Great African Rift Valley floor, the Park is over 500 square kilometres and the only home in Malawi to the Big Five mammals. Over 400 bird species are also resident among the diverse brachtegia, mopane, and riverine woodlands, palm savannahs and the associated marshy floodplains.

Day 8 & 9

From Liwonde National Park you will drive to Cape Maclear on Mumbo Island, this is a pristine and deserted tropical island, and the undisputed jewel of the Lake Malawi National Park. Mumbo Island has never been populated, and is still in its natural state with a thick covering of miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees.

Day 10 & 11

Transfer to Senga Bay, where you will stay, on Lake Malawi, at the Safari Beach Lodge, Senga Bay is regarded as one of the best beaches in the region; activities include visits to the nearby Lizard Island, Grants Fishing farm or the nearby hills for walks. Senga Bay has the largest curio-market in Malawi. Water sports are available.

Day 12 & 13

Transfer to Chinteche for a stay at Makuzi Beach Lodge where you can enjoy snorkelling, wind gliding, kayaking, diving, parasailing, fishing, boat trips, bird watching, and mountain biking and historical excursions.


Day 14 & 15

Transfer to the Viphya Plateau where you will stay at Luwawa Forest The lodge has a perfect forest setting and overlooks the Luwawa Dam which is well stocked with fish ( fishing in season is permitted ). Activities include rock climbing and abseiling from the local inselbergs, sailing and kayaking, bird watching safaris, night drives, cultural experiences in remote villages, fishing, squash, table tennis, sundowners at local mountain peaks, guided walks and mountain biking.

Viphya Forest Reserve:
This reserve is on the huge Viphya Plateau just north of Mzimba and close to the main road. It has one of the largest pine plantations in Africa. Many excellent walks can be taken through the plantation and through several indigenous forests. Luwawa has some good bird watching areas.

Day 16 & 17

Embark on a short transfer to Ntchisi Forest Lodge which sits on the escarpment of the East African Rift Valley in some of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous rainforest in an isolated spot two hours north of Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. Guests can relax whilst enjoying stunning mountain and lake views, experience the warm-hearted hospitality of a part of rural Malawi where tourists are still a rarity, and enjoy walking or mountain biking in the beautiful scenery. Ntchisi Forest Reserve offers the chance to encounter the spectacular birds, butterflies and orchids of the stunning and mysterious rainforest. Activities such as guided hiking, biking, bird watching and rainforest tours are being developed

Day 18

Depending on flight times, transfer back to Lilongwe for your return flight home.
